Brain Training and Athletic Training: Get in ‘The Zone’

The Brain Training Centers of Florida is a sponsor for The International Wake Board Championships. The following article appeared in the program for the event:

More than two centuries after Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence, declared “A strong body makes the mind strong,” a Miami counselor is telling sportsmen “A well-trained brain can make a well-trained athlete even better.”

“The field of Sports Psychology is barely a century old, but the truly effective training of the body and the brain to work as a unit is a whole new field,” reports Francis J. Flynn, Psy.D., co-founder and director of Brain Training Centers of Florida.

sports psychology - brain state conditioning - athletic training“Traditionally, the world’s best athletes – divers, swimmers, pitchers, basketball players, golfers, and others – had to work for years to be able to get ‘in the zone’ at the critical moment in competition. Today, high powered laptops and specialized computer programs allow athletes to strengthen the bond between brain and body in ways never dreamed of – even ten years ago.”

“Until recently we believed that by adolescence the brain was fully developed and unchanging. Today we know that the brain can change and develop – in a sense actually get stronger – all through life. With repetition of everything from sinking free throws, sticking dives and/or flip turns or perfectly hitting a ski jump, athletes of all ages can change specific areas of their brains,” said Flynn, who has counseled an Olympic silver medalist in platform diving and a world champion springboard diver. “It’s one of the most significant new principles of neuropsychology and athletic training. We call it ‘neuroplasticity,’ the idea that throughout our lives our brains can continue to change.”

Athletic excellence demands the carefully coordinated interaction between the brain and the body. Skilled athletes must, at one and the same time, quiet their brains to block out all distractions and use their brains to deliver specific instructions to the muscle groups involved in their sport to achieve precise movements. “From the perspective of the brain, the Olympics were exciting because of how marvelously athletes were able to achieve perfect brain-body coordination,” said Flynn.

The Brain Training Centers of Florida use the Brain State Conditioning (BSC) systems of Brain State Technologies. BSC is a personalized, computer-driven type of brain optimization computer program based on the brain’s ability to observe and direct itself into an ever more balanced and healthy state. Brain Training Centers’ clients can learn to quiet and focus their brains in order to accomplish specific sports-related tasks and, at the same time, achieve optimal levels of physical performance. In addition to athletes, BTC of Florida also works with individuals experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, sleep problems, and a wide range of other issues.

Q&A: Brain State Conditioning Pricing and Guarantee

The following question was send to us from a visitor to the Train Your Brain Blog:

I was curious in learning what guarantee this (brain state conditioning) has for stress, panic attacks, and depression. I suffer from all three and have tried several things. What exactly is done in the sessions?

As always, we thank you for your question and encourage any visitor to this website to submit questions and comments to us. This is how we responded to the reader who sent the question about brain state conditioning above:

Dear Lorenna:

Our office is in Miami Florida. At our office we offer a money back guarantee on any services we provide.

The process is that we do an assessment which is an EEG (electroencephalogram) which maps out the energy in the brain. From the brain map we are able to ascertain where the brain is functioning improperly and create the protocol to train your brain to correct the abnormalities. We then schedule brain training sessions. Each sessions last between 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours. We schedule the sessions ten at a time. It is optimal to complete the ten sessions in a five to seven day period. The protocol is to then take five days off and then come back for another ten sessions in five to seven days. This process is repeated for as long as it is necessary.

Our pricing structure is $250 for the initial assessment, $150 per session for the first ten sessions, $125 per session for the second ten sessions, and then $100 per session thereafter. We also work on a sliding scale based on ability to pay. If ability to pay is an issue, you would fill out a form and we would adjust the charges accordingly (Many times we adjust down to Zero).

I really hope this answers your questions. If not please reply, or just call me at 305-796-6979.

Thanks,
Geoff

Brain State Conditioning

The human brain is creation’s greatest wonder!

At the Brain Training Centers of Florida, our goal is to help individuals discover and unleash their brains’ complete potential, allowing them to benefit themselves and the human community.

The Brain Training Centers of Florida employ brain wave optimization with real time balancing powered by Brain State Technologies ™, an individually tailored method of balancing, harmonizing and optimizing the brain.

This Brain State Technologies ™ method involves collecting and analyzing an individual’s brain waves and producing personalized exercises to balance and harmonize the brain – Brain Wave Optimization with real time balancing. ™.

Our integrated computer systems in Florida and Arizona create a neurofeedback plan designed to assist your brain in achieving an optimal level of balance – homoeostasis. We will then assist you in moving toward specific goals by developing neurofeedback training protocols and exercises designed to enhance your life and overall emotional fitness.

At approximately three pounds and containing 100 billion neurons or brain cells, each with 1,000 to 10,000 and an average of 7,000 synapses or connections to other neurons, the adult human brain has between one and five quadrillion connections – 1,000,000,000,000,000 – 5,000,000,000,000,000 synapses.

Brain cells communicate in a process that begins with an electrical signal and ends with a neurotransmitter from the “sending” brain cell binding to a receptor on the “receiving” neuron. It lasts less than a thousandth of a second, and is repeated billions of times daily in each of the human brain’s 100 billion neurons

It is the inexpressible complexity of these electro-chemical connections that allow us to explore other planets, compose great operas and some not-so-great rock music, write novels and poems, and share love and affection while caring for ourselves and others.

The flow of energy among these quadrillions of cells makes us human and determines the quality of our emotional and intellectual lives, and, in many cases, how we feel physically.

Brain cells communicate among themselves with a conduction velocity action potential of 1.2 to 250 mph. These quadrillions of brain cells share their electro-chemical messages at a rate of about 10 impulses (signals) per second – producing roughly 10 quadrillion (1016) impulses or signals per second. All the while, the brain is constantly consuming between 10 and 25 watts of energy. When well-tuned and properly coordinated, this communication among the elements of the most complex computer network in the universe allows us to feel healthy and balanced, a sensation known in psychology as homeostasis.

Homeostasis also depends on balance – between similar structures on the right and left sides of the brain, along the midline of the brain, and between elements in the front and back of the brain.

This balance works much like the network of computers that control the engines and navigation systems and all the other elements of a $40 million 154 foot super yacht. Improperly operating computers – running too fast or too slow, failing to interpret important data, or scrambling critical messages – can throw this ship off course or keep it turning in circles in the middle of the Pacific.

The Brain Training Center of Florida provides an individually tailored method of balancing and optimizing your brain. Beginning with a personal assessment that will include more than 500 specific electroencephalogram readings, our ultra-state-of-the-art computer system will produce personalized exercises designed to optimize your brain’s functioning and establish homeostasis. Brain Wave Optimization with Real Time Balancing ™ is a form of neuro-feedback that uses the ratios of your brain waves to balance and harmonize the brain and enhance the brain’s performance. It is completely non-invasive; no drugs are involved; there is no movement of electricity into the brain or body; and, it involves no surgical procedures.

Our EEG readings allow our computers to convert brain energy into the best possible sound energy for your brain and encourage your brain to achieve optimal patterns using computer graphics and sound encouragement.

By combining cutting-edge brain science with continually updated computer programming, we help clients achieve optimal results in real time. During your first visit to the Brain Training Centers of Florida, your trainer will conduct an initial review of your goals and the areas of your life in which you would like to see improvement. An initial assessment and brain mapping will gather brain wave data from the brain. Our Brain State Technologies ™ proprietary software will use your goals, brain mapping and assessment data to produce an individualized brain training program.

In training, the computer will translate your data into sounds that represent the patterns in which your brain will function best in specific locations. Sounds may vary by note and/or volume based on the real-time functioning of your brain – in effect holding up a mirror to your brain to allow it to observe and correct itself.

Brain Training sessions usually last 90 and each session addresses 12 to 14 different sections of the brain. As you relax in a zero-gravity chair, you may be asked to focus on your breathing or to entertain a number of detailed visualizations. Our extremely sensitive electrodes will detect the intensity and frequency of brain waves in specific areas of your brain and our computers will translate this energy into sounds that represent optimal patterns for your brain at specific locations. These sounds will vary by note and volume based on how your brain is functioning and the computer’s real-time feedback will allow the brain to listen to itself and change or move in the direction of greater balance.

Press Release: Brain Training Center Opens in South Florida

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BRAIN TRAINING CENTER OPENS IN SOUTH FLORIDA

Revolutionary approach to balance and harmony in the human brain.

Miami, Florida — October 30, 2008 — For the first time in South Florida, an affiliate of Brain State Technologies – Brain Training Centers of Florida – has opened its doors, offering the worlds most advanced computer programs and neurofeedback technology in a revolutionary approach to balance the human brain. Brain Training is utilized to help individuals with a wide range of depression, addiction, and anxiety disorders as well as those who want to enhance their creativity, intellectual or athletic performance.

Brain Training Centers of Florida opened in February of this year and is already experiencing success with its clients. Francis J. Flynn, Psy.D., CAP, is president of Brain Training Centers.

The premise of the program is that the brain is the central control system for everything in the body, The “Brain Train” system engages state- of- the- art computer technology and specially designed neurofeedback and EEG equipment that captures and analyzes the energy levels of the brain.

“The brain is the central control for virtually everything that happens in the human body. When it is out of balance, that imbalance manifests in myriad of ways from depression and anxiety to addiction, PTSD and other emotional problems,” said Flynn. “When we can help individuals achieve greater balance in the brain – harmonizing their brain waves – the results are pretty close to miraculous.”

Francis Flynn, who earned his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Nova Southeastern University and is a state licensed Certified Addictions Professional, knows something about miracles. He has been a Catholic priest for 32 years, including eleven years of service as a chaplain in the Florida prison system. He has made seven trips to China where he has lectured about addiction, counseling and psychology in medical and nursing schools. In June of 2008, he ended eighteen months of service as a chaplain at the Hanley Center in West Palm Beach – one of the nation’s premier addictions counseling centers – to fully dedicate himself to Brain Training and the launch of the Centers.

Flynn personally experienced Brain Training in Scottsdale, Arizona, home of Brain state Technologies. “I was looking for new ways to accelerate and enhance the recovery process for alcoholics and addicts but would never promote any method that I had not tried myself.,” said Flynn. At the Scottsdale headquarters, he told them that he had a benign non-Parkinsonian tremor in his left hand. “They programmed the computer to address the problem and it was gone in seven minutes. Nine months later, it’s still gone. While I call that borderline miraculous, I am always careful to stress that Brain Training does not treat diseases or medical problems but rather it helps the brain to be balanced and, when that happens, many other problems are resolved,” he continued.

Brain Training Centers of Florida is working with clients who suffer from PTSD, including veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; victims of childhood sexual abuse, caretaker fatigue and all forms of addiction.

Geoffrey Cole, who directs the technical aspects of clients’ individualized Brain Training programs, said “every day, I see men and women get their lives back. Their anxieties and depression disappear – even depressions that have lasted for decades. Because we use the most advanced systems in the field, the changes are quick, deep and long-lasting.”
